If you've spent any time at all shopping around for a MIG welder, then chance are pretty good, that you've come across the words Miller, and Lincoln Electric. Both fine manufacturers of welders, and both have many satisfied customers. If you can find a good deal on either welder, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either brand.
What's of more concern, then the brand name of your welding equipment, would be the size and strength of welder you get. Should I buy a 110V or a 220V welder for instance. While, I know everybody has a budget to work with, there's no point in getting a tool that's inadequate for the job, as you'll never use it. If your concerned at all about price, then looking online is a good choice. At the very least, you'll get a better idea of price, and you can use that as a negotiating chip with your local welding supply shop.
If you looked at Miller, and Lincoln, you may also want to consider some of the Hobart models as well. Also bear in mind, the amount of welding you plan on doing. If your just starting out, the Miller MM212, and DV12 are good choices to start with. The Hobart 187 is a good choice for a beginning welder, and won't cost as much as the Lincolns or the Millers. The miller 110 or 135 series would be fine for doing simple welding with thin metals. Craftsman also make a good all purpose MIG welder that you should be able to get for less than $500 for home welding.
